Application Compatibility Soft blocks

Application compatibility soft blocks refer to the warning dialog you see when attempting to run or install applications with known issues.  The Citrix ICA client is a great example, the dialog looks like this:

If you have tested the application and found that it works for your scenario, you may wish to hide this dialog.  It’s potentially confusing for users and therefore a help desk call generator.  There is a group policy setting they may use to disable all soft blocks – but it’s preferred to remove the warning for specific apps known to work. To do this:

  • Take a before snapshot of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags
  • Open the application
  • Select Don’t show this message again
  • Click Run program
  • A new value has been added to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags

    (for Citrix 9 it’s "{d3869258-b773-4101-8abc-30928314c3b2}"=dword:00000004)

That value can be deployed in the image (or other method) to this location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags

The soft block is now effectively disabled for this application.
