Windows 7 Looking Like 2010

Mary Jo has gotten wind of some info coming out of MGX, Microsoft annual sales get together, that offered a tentative roadmap to Windows 7 which has them targeting 2010.  Microsoft is planning a three year development cycle and then will allow time to work out the bugs. In the mean time we can expect several updates to the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, and Windows Vista Service Pack 1.  Check out this and, shockingly an official confirmation in her post here.

I wish Microsoft would eliminate the 32 bit version. Sure, that means people wouldn't be able to upgrade, but after 3 years, they really need a new computer anyway. Plus, it would eliminate the need to code for such a low common denominator.

Apple has it right with this one. provide only one version. If your software hasn't upgraded to 64 bit, then it will still run within the OS. I wish they eliminate the many different versions of the OS (business/enterprise, ultimate, etc) and again only offer one. But I don;t think they will do this. :-(

I think they will do it like they are doing with server where standard will become x64.  You might also see x64 only for the "top teir" sku's like enterprise and ultimate and 32-bit only for "starter" and those cool N editions.... just a couple of guess on ways they could play it.

@ Jaxim:

Apple provides fat binaries, including 32 and 64 bit code as well as PPC and x86 versions of both.

By providing "one version", they quadruple the size of each binary.
