In the same announcement that gave us quad-CableCARD media center hardware, to allow for live streams to your other extenders, and the first non-Xbox 360 media extenders for Windows Vista they also dropped on us that Microsoft will be making available to all Media Center customers a new Internet TV feature. Should Joost and Livestation be a little worried, or will this be to enable IPTV partners content via Media Center?
The number of content providers delivering video over the Internet continues to grow, and Microsoft is supporting this by adding a new Internet TV feature to Windows Media Center. Microsoft said its Internet TV service will be available for all Windows Vista Home Premium-and Windows Vista Ultimate-based PCs in the U.S. This new capability will allow a range of video content to be streamed to any Windows Media Center or Extender in the connected home. Further details will be announced at the DigitalLife event in New York on Sept. 27, 2007.
Guess we have to wait until DigitalLife to find out, but it doesn't hurt to speculate. My guess is that this might be a big coming out party for Microsoft Mediaroom, the Microsoft IPTV platform.
What is your guess?
UPDATE: I was wrong with Mediaroom or IPTV, see my latest post on this here.
