Mary Jo has the inside track on a new platform that Microsoft is working on code-named "Echoes". The idea behind it is to extend "Windows Live" and other Microsoft services to phone carries.
She says that Echoes will "provide carriers with a variety of services, ranging from a common network address book, to SMS in/out messaging, simultaneous ringing, click-to-call, single-sign on and more".
Echoes is planned to ship with Windows Live Messenger 9.0 later this year, according to Mary Jo.
Eventually maybe none of us will have a phone number, if Microsoft has its way. I think that is rather lofty and the only way I see this making any headway is if this becomes a truly open platform that will work beyond the confines of Windows Mobile and Windows Live.
